I WEAR THE CUFFS, YOU ARE THE SLAVE

Pushed into a corner
And tethered to a peg
I hold out my hands to you
as you present your cuffs
pitch darkness accompanies the
heavy metal door sound
you isolate and like a python
constrict and await my last breath
a part of me remains untouched
simply because I tapped
stored and preserved well
and now ‘chew the cud’
handcuffed and in the dark
on this cold stone floor
with no pen or slate
with time on my hands
have written books in volumes
on fields too high for you and
on each a seal of freedom
a fire burns inside me
lighting up this damp
tethered like a cow I may be
yet soaring as an eagle
greed, hatred and fear
have taken you hostage
you run from invisible shadows
you are the slave
